Alicia Silverstone

The venerable author is undeniably one of the most influential cultural giants of the English language, and her streamlined third-person narrative is a perfect example. Director Christina Heckerling also shows an innate flair for analogy and a knack for putting the classic into the modern context.
In the MGM adaptation of Northanger Abbey, Alicia Silverstone stars as the ill-fated Catherine Morland, a wealthy woman with a feverish imagination. She also plays her childhood friend Isabella Thorpe. Andrew Davies, who directed Emma and Pride and Prejudice, also wrote the screenplay for Northanger Abbey. While the movie is fun, it does take some of the eroticism out of the story.
