AMC Classic Quincy 6
AMC Theatres has announced plans to reopen theaters in several Illinois cities, including Quincy, where they will open the AMC Classic-Quincy 6 on January 29, 2021. The theater will accept credit cards and debit cards for ticket purchases, and preferentially, AMC gift cards. Although cash is accepted at the ticket booth, concessions will soon be cashless. AMC theaters will also allow guests to book private showings for groups of up to 20 people.

Washington Theater
The Washington Theatre is one of the most historically significant structures in Quincy, Illinois. It is 96 years old and is home to a variety of cultural events including a local community theater and a contemporary community theater. Previously, the theater was home to a vaudeville house that closed about 20 years ago. In 2001, the Quincy City Council formed a special ad hoc committee to study the possibility of restoring the Washington Theater. Killis Almond, a theatre preservation architect, was appointed to lead the commission. The Commission then engaged Janis Barlow to conduct a feasibility study. The final report outlines a market, needs and business planning phase.
A consulting firm from Toronto, Canada, studied the Washington Theatre in 2006. The firm estimated that the theater had the potential to become a community center and an entertainment complex. The theater would need around $5 million to $8 million to be renovated, with the next phase of the renovations beginning in 2020. Until then, the theatre will likely remain a cultural landmark in Quincy. And despite the potential for development, Wild Quincy has already uncovered evidence of ghostly activity within the Washington Theater.
The Washington Theatre in Quincy, Illinois was originally called Washington Square Theatre. It was the city’s largest and most beautiful theatre. Its arhitectural style was influenced by Byzantine and Mediterranean Revival styles. It is composed of brick with terra cotta detailing. The exterior is painted in blues, greens and off-whites. The interior features a wraparound second story balcony. There are four main entrances, one from each side.

The Richardsonian Romanesque-style structure that stands on Fourth Street and Maine Street is a striking reminder of the former Quincy Public Library. Built in 1888, the library was a cornerstone of Quincy’s cultural heritage, a basic need for public welfare, and an icon for the community. And as such, it was a source of great pride for the city. And a source of pride for the citizens of Quincy.
