There are certain movies that will never fail to make you cry. Titanic is one classic example. Netflix recently added Revolutionary Road, directed by Sam Mendes. It’s about a failing marriage and a reunited Kate Winslet and Leo. And of course, we cannot forget the chick flicks and rom-coms. Marley & Me
The wistful dog story of Marley and Me is one of those movies that will tug at your heartstrings. This movie, based on the memoir by John Grogan, is a touching portrayal of two people who learn to love and respect each other through a dog. The film stars Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson as a newlywed couple who are unsure about the idea of parenthood. They are accompanied by their naughty yellow Labrador, Marley.
Jenny suffers from postpartum depression and is stressed raising two small children. As she grows increasingly frustrated with Marley, she seeks help from Sebastian, her bachelor friend. Sebastian agrees to take Marley for a few days after she insists on finding a home for him. Soon, Sebastian realizes that Marley is an indispensable part of the family, and they become closer than ever. Marley’s behavior reflects this.
John’s column, “John’s Life,” is published twice-weekly, and his editor, Arnie Klein, offers him a job as a columnist. Despite the difficulty, John realizes that Marley is the perfect topic for his column. He is able to find plenty of material to write about and doubles the paper’s circulation in no time. However, when Marley is eighteen months old, the family is devastated. They have to euthanize Marley and mourn his loss. He dies shortly after and is buried beneath a tree in their front yard.
The Way We Were
The Way We Were is a sweeping love story that features Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand. Despite being a period piece, it does have its share of heartbreaking moments. Like many other Hollywood films, The Way We Were follows the lives of two people who fall in love but are not quite right for each other. The relationship ultimately ends with them estranged and separated. In fact, Robert Redford’s character may even have a child that he never knows.
The romantic plot centered on a young man who falls in love with a girl from a “different world” goes back to the silent era. The romantic angle is handled brilliantly by the two actors, who play a feisty Communist party activist and a hot all-American athlete. While Streisand is a powerful actress, the film’s other stars, Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin, are both great as their characters. The film was a hit in the 70s, when nostalgia allowed actors to get emotional displays, and the movie still feels very much of that time.
